Pagnol-Dubout is above all a long collaboration that began in 1936 and ended in 1965 with the creation of 22 cinema posters and the illustration of 7 titles, including Topaze.

It was also a long friendship, which can still be seen in the correspondence between the two men, with "mon cher Albert", "affectueusement", "tu es le Roi", "ton ami", and even "Topaze s'appelle Albert". In a letter dated March 26, 1959, Pagnol wrote to Dubout: "You are without doubt the greatest illustrator of our time, and your line is incomparable. A surety, strength and finesse reminiscent of the greatest Asians?

It's as strong as etchings, but finer and more delicate, and your colors, always surprising, are a feast for the eye. Dubout produced a press cartoon caricaturing Pagnol playing boules with a dozen "Immortals", published in La Bataille in April 1947, for his induction into the Académie Française.

There are many anecdotes between the two artists, some intimate, others difficult to recount outside the context of the times. Their meeting places were in Paris, either in Pagnol?s private mansion in the 17th arrondissement, or at Alexandre?s restaurant, or in Pagnol?s home in the South of France (but never in Dubout?s studio, as no one was allowed in, including family members).

After their last collaboration in 1965, Dubout began a long friendship with Frédéric Dard.
